I hate the idea of working x amount of hours. Sometimes those hours are just useless and you are just doing them to finish your day.
Very good post, Akos. Concise and to the point, no need to dress it up with noise
I don't know if you know about it, but that's what Hemmingway did with his writing.
“Learned never to empty the well of my writing, but always to stop when there was still something there in the deep part of the well, and let it refill at night from the springs that fed it. I always worked until I had something done, and I always stopped when I knew what was going to happen next. That way I could be sure of going on the next day.” — Ernest Hemmingway
Such a beautiful quote from Hemmingway. Thanks for sharing this. It applies to any creative work probably because you can get back to something unfinished.
Today, it's only an unfinished task that you see as a means to get to your goal.
Tomorrow, it's a task that inspires many new goals.
Great content, I couldn't help but laugh at the end. I think I have the most dopamine addicted brain I have seen and I believe this will work very well for me.
Appreciate the kind words, Desmond. Sometimes I can't help but write funny stuff! It's difficult when talking about professional topics so I'm always happy when people smile reading my newsletters. We should smile more! 😃
It depends on the task, for sure. If I have to deliver something by the end of the day, I'll have to finish it. If it's a longer task spanning multiple days, it works. Try it!
Excellent article, Akos. The afternoon shift after lunch break is genuinely the hardest part of my day 😂 I tend to schedule my meetings in the afternoon for this reason.
Btw, I love the clickbait title. “HR hates me for this weird trick” so similar to those sleazy Facebook ads in the 2010s. “Doctors hate me for this weight loss trick” 😂
This trick is awesome. I think I initially learned this trick from Gregor and started applying it. It actually works.
I sometimes forget to use it though. Thanks for the reminder, Akos :)
You're welcome, Jordan! ☺️ Happy to trick your brain to do more great stuff! 😃

Glad you liked it Fran!

Great advice, breaks are so important for our physiology.
We use up a lot of brain resources when doing focus work, and some idle time can help us recover some of those resources.
I think it is something workplaces should implement as well, like some mandatory 10-minute breaks throughout the 8-hours workday
Does it work for the end of the day too? Or would you rather finish up and get closure.

haha nice advice. I rarely if ever tried that! I will definitely try it the next time I am dragging tasks by the end of the day.
Thank you so much for the mention, Akos!
Good luck, hope it will work for you as well! 🫡
This is actually a fantastic technique Akos.
Will definitely try it out...🙂
Also, thanks for the mention! Much appreciated.
Let me know if it works for you! 🙂

I hoped my readers are old enough for the Facebook ad joke 😄
Thanks!
